Hi.
Got a problem with my USB-Drive, I can't write anything in it nor format it, all this because it write-protected itself lol, since it doesn't have a write-protect switch nowhere!
Can't delete, there's no delete option on right-click!
Can't format:
Disk Management says it's healthy, but can't manipulate nothing with it:
Diskpart fails too, sends 'salute' to event log:
The little registry trick fails too:
Tried formatting it through 'Safe Mode with command prompt' failed too!
Tried many formatting tools and apps, some fail, some couldn't even detect it!
Tried it on my other Win XP, MAC, Linux, same..
Tried with some live cd-s fails too!

Any suggestion?!

Time to buy a new disk. I have had the same thing happen. There was no resolution.

Another possible solution:

Open the command line editor of windows. You find that under 'Start', then choose 'Run'. There you enter regedit.
Go to the path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystem CurrentControlSetControl StorageDevicePolicies This is simply a folder within a folder and so on. The final folder, the one you are looking for is called StorageDevicePolicies, and as the name suggests contains the settings for how the storage devices (USB flash) should behave. Here you right click on: 'WriteProtect' and select 'modify'.
Here you set the value that appears to '0″. Press enter and that's it. (In other words: Default value: DWORD=0) Possible values are: 0 = Disabled, 1 = Enabled Set the value to 0 and you should be back in business.

There is one other suggestion. If you have any bootable partition software try that delete the partition, if it lets you then make a new partition > then format the drive. This way your not in windows environment. If that doesn't work then wait for the mfg to contact you.

Have you tried booting your PC with a Linux Live-CD bootable disk (don't install Linux, just test drive it from the CD) and then use the system tools to format the USB drive.

I would download the most current Ubuntu flavor and create a bootable CD or DVD from the ISO you download. I keep a Linux bootable CD in my toolkit, has gotten me out of a lot of jams with Windows HDD's I had problems, even fixing MBR issues..

OK. folks, do we all realize that this is a 4GB flash drive worth about 6-bucks. Certainly not worth all this effort when even if it does get fixed it has a flaw which may create the problem again. I certainly would not trust it with any valuable data.

Throw it away! get a new one that is trustworthy. And.. Keep a duplicate of that, too.

I think many of us are wondering if there's a Secret way that a Flash Drive can be protected which we don't know about.

I think we are trying to exhaust all possible known good software solutions so we can indeed determine the drive is physically damaged without a doubt for knowledge sake.

If the Drive were physically damaged, the message should be something like 'Drive Failure' or 'Unknown Failure' or 'Device Not Recognized' or 'Device Unknown', Etc,...

There should be NO picture in Disk Manager of a formated Flash Drive if the device is physically damaged ????

@Rick, You put that very well. Inquiring minds would like to know why something fails to operate as designed.

It's not damaged it's write protected. I have one. But, I haven't seen it for a while. If you want me to look for it I'd be glad to send it to you. But, I really think all this talent would be better used on something else.

Shkumbin, try this. In diskpart (in the picture posted above), after you 'select' the usb drive, type 'ATTRIBUTES DISK CLEAR READONLY' (no quotes) and hit enter. This should clear the 'read only' attribute of the usb drive. For more info on the command type HELP ATTRIBUTES DISK.

It happens. That is why backups are necessary on all devices, even backup devices. But, as I said I have been through this before and the only solution was to discard it.

Post the Make and Model Number of the Flash Drive so others can AVOID the Product and the Manufacturer.

How to create a bootable USB to format hard drive? is there any bootable USB hard drive format utility to format hard disk?

This page concludes two parts: one is to format USB when it shows 'USB cannot format, USB drive is write protected, USB format error, or USB becomes raw'; the second part is to make bootable USB of partition software to format hard drives without running Windows.

Windows itself has default tool: disk management, or you can just right-click on the USB in file explorer and choose Format to complete the mission when new USB is connected, but sometimes when USB drive is write protected or shows format error, the snap in disk managing utility cannot format any disk.

Formatting A Write Protected Usb

Partition Expert, with 64-bit bootable and portable program is major in disk managing, format operation is always stable, you can use it as a format utility, hence when Windows Disk management fails on format, we can try Partition Expert, you may follow the steps below:

1. Plug in the USB and Run the program
2. Right-click on the USB drive in the disk-map and click format volume
3. Confirm the operation and Commit it in the main interface
